The first 90 days as a new authority are the most expensive, the most stressful, and the most important period of your trucking business. Here's the insurance side of what to do.
Day 1 to 7: Get bound
You can't activate your authority until your insurance carrier files a BMC-91 with FMCSA. So before you even start hunting for loads, you need:
- Primary liability ($1M)
- Cargo ($100K)
- Physical damage on your truck
Get bound. Get the COI. File the BMC-91. Wait 24-48 hours for FMCSA to flip you to active.
Day 7 to 30: Pick up your first loads
Now the job is to start running clean and getting paid. From an insurance standpoint, every load matters because:
- Every load adds to your operating history
- Every accident or claim in this window is the worst possible time
- Carriers re-underwrite some accounts at 6 months, your record now is what they'll see then
Drive defensively, log honestly, run your pre-trips. The cheapest insurance long term is a clean record.
Day 30 to 60: Build broker relationships
Most brokers won't dispatch new authorities under 30-90 days old. After day 30, more brokers open up. After day 90, almost all open up. From an insurance standpoint, just keep your COIs current with each broker you set up with.
If a broker requires specific coverage you don't have (trailer interchange, specific cargo limits, additional insured), call your agent. We can usually add it the same day.
Day 60 to 90: Watch for billing surprises
Most new authorities finance their premium monthly through a premium finance company. Your first installment is usually fine. Your second and third can sometimes catch you off guard if cash flow is tight.
Set up auto-pay from your business account. Track your renewal date, most policies are 12-month terms, but renewal shopping starts 60 days before expiration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Carrying the FMCSA $750K minimum. Brokers require $1M. The difference is small monthly.
- Skipping cargo coverage. Almost no broker will dispatch you without it.
- Using a generalist agent. They won't know which carriers write your profile.
- Letting a payment lapse. A 30-day lapse can cost you the authority.
- Hiding violations during quoting. Carriers pull MVR and PSP. Hiding things gets you cancelled after binding.
- Not building reserves for renewal. Year two will probably be cheaper, but plan for it.
